Public Authority Websites

November 9, 2011

Perhaps the overriding objective of the Public Authorities Accountability Act of 2005 and the Public Authorities Reform Act of 2009 was to increase the amount of programmatic and fiscal information available to the public. Transparency is to be obtained through the use of detailed websites and web casts of board meetings. To assist public authorities in meeting their disclosure requirements, the Authorities Budget Office issued Policy Guidance No. 10-03, Posting and Maintaining Reports on Public Authority Web Sites.

The ABO’s examination of authority websites since the issuance of this Policy Guidance has revealed that many websites are largely in compliance, but other websites are not sufficiently illuminating. The ABO hopes that by posting the individual reports on its website it may serve to provide additional direction to authorities whose websites have yet to be evaluated.
